Watanoha Coastal Forest

The Watanoha Coastal Forest is located in Ishinomaki, in the eastern coast, Miyagi Prefecture (38˚ 25' 05" N; 141˚ 28' 05" E). This coastal forest, as most of coastal forests in Japan, is made of black pine (Pinus thunbergii). On March 11, 2011, the Mega Tsunami that hit the eastern coastal areas of Japan, also destroyed almost all the existing coastal forests present at that time. Of the few coastal forests areas that survived the physical impact of the Tsunami and the chemical impact of sea water in the vadose area, affecting the root zone, was that of Watanoha. Deep underground layers were responsible for deep root growth of trees, which in turn made trees more resistant to physycal stress.  As shown in the adjacent photos (top one from Google Earth and bottom one, self created orthomosaic from UAV-acquired images). We can observe that tree population has decreased 50% in comparison to prior to 2011, but also we can observe that an active and robust natural regeneration is taking place.
