Agriculture is tightly related to foods essential for our lives and environmental problems, to which great attentions are currently paid, and Agricultural Science can make a great contribution to the future of our planet. Faculty of Agriculture in Yamagata University had responded to the requests from societies to address the issues in foods, resources and environment via research activities but such issues (e.g. food insecurity, resource depletion environmental destruction, biodiversity loss, global warming) have been more complicated, multidisciplinary and larger in recent decades. To address these issues, not only knowledge and skills in a specific discipline but also understanding of multidisciplinary issues in foods, life and environment which are included in “broad” Agricultural Sciences, capacity of multifaceted and comprehensive judgement, and sense of balance are required.
Faculty of Agriculture (Bachelor program) offers the interdisciplinary education, in which students learn about global agriculture and its trend comprehensively with enhanced acquirement and utilization of diverse knowledge, for the mission to develop the human resources who:
have the capacity of comprehensive and balanced judgement obtained by leaning exhaustively about food, life and environmental sciences.
have the strong curiosity and inquisitive mind about food, life and environmental sciences, and can work mainly for production, processing and distribution of safe and reliable foods; development and utilization of functional foods and its materials; conservation of environment of lush greenery and water courses; and revitalization of regional society.
have considerable insight and vision for issues in food, life and environmental sciences, and the capacity to address the issues by themselves.
Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (Master program) offers the education not only to deepen students’ specialties abut also to integrate their knowledge segmentalized by each discipline for the mission to foster advanced professionals such as:
those who have a rich humanity, broad knowledge about food, life and environmental sciences, and specialty in bioresource science, bioenvironmental science, and bioproduction science; and can use their creativities for addressing global and regional issues.
specialists not only in bioresource science, bioenvironmental science, and bioproduction science but also in landscape science who have global scope and career path supported by the ability to carry out researches abroad.
environmental leaders with global vision who have obtained knowledge and skills on environmental conservation systematically in the classes joined by both Japanese and international students, and can contribute to stable agricultural production and food security in global and domestic levels.
Our campus is located in the city of Tsuruoka city, the northern part of Japan, around 1 hour by airplane or 4 hours by train from Tokyo. Tsuruoka is registered as UNESCO creative city of gastronomy and has various vegetables and fruits endemic to the region only. We have 3 courses, Agri-Science, Bio-Science and Eco-Science, that cover extensive research fields. They include Plant production and environmental agriculture, Agricultural chemistry, Forest and forest products science, Agricultural science in society and economy, Agro-engineering, and Animal life science.
In our faculty, foreign students are almost 10 % of all students including master and PhD course, and international activities are important for us. Now we have concluded agreements for international exchange with 21 universities and 32 departments in the world.
We all are looking forward to seeing you in our university.
